Times Square in New York City is the most frequented place in the world, even topping all of Disney’s theme parks, with 131 million people each year. That’s 360,000 people going through Times Square every day! It’s so heavily visited that 22% of money spent by visitors to NYC are spent here in Times Square.
What Times Square is best known for is, of course, the New Years Eve ball drop, with more than a million people coming annually to welcome in the new year—a tradition that began way back in 1907. On New Years Eve 1999, roughly two million people flocked to Times Square, welcoming in a whole new millenium. This marked the greatest number of people ever coming together for a celebration since the August 1945 celebration for the end of World War II.
Broadway theatre is definitely another one of New York City’s greatest features, with more than $1 billion each year in ticket sales, making it an incredibly important segment of the entertainment industry. It also just so happens that Broadway runs right along Times Square! In fact, a fair number of the glowing signs and advertisements that you see all over Times Square are advertising those many great Broadway shows. Click here for a list of shows and their locations.
There is so much more we could tell you about Times Square, but you really ought to just go and discover it all for yourself. Spend a day (or a week) exploring everything there is to see, and eat, and go, and do. Also be sure to check out the many events on the Square.
