The Bronx Zoo is the largest urban zoo in the world, with 4,000 animals, from 650 species. If you spent just 30 seconds looking at each animal, it would take you more than 33 hours to see everything! The Bronx Zoo is certainly a place that you could visit many, many, times before it would ever get old. Many of the exhibits at the zoo are arranged by geography, but some, such as the World of Birds, are arranged by their classification in the animal kingdom.
The Bronx Zoo has more than 15 different exhibitions, with just a few of the key ones highlighted below:
The Himalayan Highlands features animals from the mountaintops of Nepal, including red pandas, white-naped cranes, and the impressive snow leopard. This is all in a setting of Asian foliage, with some accompanying Asian artwork, as well!
JungleWorld is among the largest exhibitions at the Bronx Zoo, with more than 800 creatures from the Asian jungle, like the Matschie’s Tree Kangaroo, gibbons, tapir, otters, langurs, scorpions, fire-bellied toads, stag beetles, and a great many more. This exhibit also contains a waterfall and pond, which is home to fly river turtles, iridescent sharks, gourami, and tinfoil barbs.
The African Plains is a very large outdoor exhibit containing all of the animals you’d expect to see on the African Plains. The mighty lion, zebras, giraffes, packs of African wild dogs, the curious looking nyala, and storks.
Everything from the 300 pound anaconda, to the penny-sized Kihansy spray toad, are on display in the World of Reptiles. There are pythons 22 feet long, the fearsome king cobra, and anaconda, the Cuban crocodile, the brilliantly colored poison dart frog, the massive alligator snapping turtle, to mention just a few of the wonderful array of animals in the World of Reptiles.
The Children’s Zoo is a safe place for children to interact with animals, by feeding goats, sheep, and llamas, and seeing many other friendly creatures.
There are a couple of admission options for the zoo. You can get the Total Experience Ticket, which includes everything except Camel Rides, or get the cheaper General Admission Ticket, and pay extra for entry into the special rides and attractions, like the Butterfly Garden, JungleWorld, Bug Carousel, or the Zoo Shuttle. To see all of the different ticket options, and when the zoo is open, visit their Hours & Rates page. You can find more information about the different exhibits, save money on tickets, and see many fantastic pictures of the animals at the zoo by visiting BronxZoo.com.
