Grand Central Terminal, the largest and most beautiful train station in the world, is situated in New York City, one of America’s largest hubs of business and transportation. Constructed in 1871, the railroad station was then known as the Grand Central Depot. Then in 1899 & 1900, the building was largely demolished and rebuilt, with a new name: Grand Central Station. Finally, during the ten years from 1903 to 1913, the building was completely razed and rebuilt, with the name once again changing, this time to the Grand Central Terminal, a name that has remained until today. But despite only being called Grand Central Station for a few years, today, a hundred years later, the name is still often used.
Grand Central Terminal is one of the world’s most popular tourist attractions, with about 21.6 million visitors every year. If you want to learn the history of the station firsthand, there are a couple of options available to you. The self-guided Audio Tour is available every day of the year, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm. The tour can take between 30 and 60 minutes, based on how much time you want to spend. For the Audio Tour, you will be given an audio device and headphones, along with a map of the station. If you wish, you can also download an app, and take the tour from your smart phone. The Grand Tour, offered by the Municipal Art Society, is a 75 minute guided tour, which starts at 12:30 pm each day. The Grand Tour is more expensive than the Audio Tour, but it is also more in-depth, and has a live guide, allowing you to ask any questions you may have.
More information about the tours can be found by heading over to GrandCentralTerminal.com.
The terminal can be found at 87 East 42nd Street, New York, NY 10017.
