The Frick Collection is among the finest small art collections and galleries in New York City. The museum resides in what was once the New York house of businessman and art collector, Henry Clay Frick. The museum has around a hundred paintings, along with several marble, bronze, and terracotta statues and sculptures. Despite the collection being a smaller one, it has many great works, including several by Francisco Goya, François Boucher, Thomas Gainsborough, Rembrandt, and many others. It must be noted though, that not all of the art is on display at any given time.
The paintings at the Frick Collection span a 600 year timespan, the oldest going back as far as the 1200s, and the newest being from the 19th century. For those who wish not only to view art, but also create it, the museum does allow sketching, albeit with some limitation. The Frick also offers several special programs, including lectures, concerts, and other performances.
Admission to the Frick Collection is free to members, but costs $18 for adults, $15 for those 65 and up, and $10 for students. Children under 10 years of age are not permitted, in order to protect the artworks, and to preserve the atmosphere that the museum desires. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, and closed Mondays and most holidays. For full details, see the museum’s hours here.
The collection can be found at 1 East 70th Street, New York, NY 10021.
